ISO22301 Certification Achieved - the first company in Sweden! Jan 2014

Posted on 19 January

On 16th January 2014 BSI confirmed that one of PlanB Consulting's clients, a technology company, for it operation based in Sweden, has been recommended for certification to ISO22301 the international standard for business continuity. The company, we believe, is the first organization in the whole of Sweden to have achieved this certification.

What is ISO22301?

ISO22301 is the international standard of Business Continuity Management (BCM) system, which was officially released on 15 May, 2012. The standard was written by leading business continuity experts and provides the best framework for managing business continuity in an organization.

ISO 22301 identifies the fundamentals of a business continuity management system, establishing the process, principles and terminology of business continuity management.

The standard provides a basis for understanding, developing and implementing business continuity within the company and gives confidence to the company’s stakeholders. It is used to assure key stakeholders that our business is fully prepared and we can meet internal, regulatory and customer requirements.

The standard provides us with a framework to ensure that we can continue operating during the most challenging and unexpected circumstances – protecting our staff, preserving our reputation and providing the ability to continue to operate and trade. By achieving the standard we can demonstrate to our customers and stakeholders that we will be “here today and here tomorrow”.

Why did the company pursued the standard?

The initial driver for achieving the standard was a requirement for the ISO22301 from one of company's biggest customers. As the journey to the certification took place the company began to see the real benefits of the standard, in terms of identifying risks to the company’s operations and improving their organizational resilience. A number of major risks where identified as part of the business continuity project and the company are presently taking steps by investing to strengthen their infrastructure further, mitigating the identified risks.

By achieving the ISO22301 the company, should an incident occur, is prepared to manage the consequences of it minimizing the impact on its customers, staff and key stakeholders.

The company contracted PlanB Consulting,  to assist them on their journey to achieving the standard.

Charlie Maclean-Bristol from PlanB Consulting who lead the project said

“initially those in company were questioning the benefit and purpose of business continuity but as the project progressed they saw it not just as a tick box customer requirement, but providing real business benefit in terms of identifying and mitigating risk as well as providing increased resilience”.
